December, come to me
I hope I can see
You not just in dreams
I will let you be
Why can't you believe
How much you really mean?
December, won't you come
Back with snow, even sun
Don't say that it's done
I will carry you home
Take you from the loneliest
Place you have known
I will carry you home
Take me from the loneliest
Place I have known
~ Norah Jones
Of course it would be difficult to "analyze" these lyrics when there are so few of them. For today, the first day of December, I am departing from the original intent of this blog (to respond and react to song lyrics) in order to just give us a big ole chill pill. Who better to provide that than Norah Jones? Despite a friend of mine referring to her as "Snorin' Norah," I love Norah Jones and never met a Norah Jones song I didn't like. This song appears on 2009's The Fall. The live video is from an April 2010 performance on British TV. It's beautiful.
It is generally well-known that Norah Jones is the daughter of Ravi Shankar, famed sitar player whose popularity in the Sixties was largely due to his musical collaborations with George Harrison. But Norah is a musician in her own right, and no one was more surprised than she at her sudden rise to fame. In an industry dominated by drums and guitars, Jones often accompanies herself on piano, an instrument I never tire of listening to. And this song illustrates that. Add to that the comfort of her voice, and I am ready to let her soothe my soul.
And my soul does need some soothing today. Political news is breaking fast and furious, and I will admit to getting caught up in it. It's intense. Between that and the constant and persistent holiday noise, perhaps we can all benefit from a little quiet time.
I hope you can find your own peace this month, whether it comes through music or festivity or time spent with friends, family or pets. Go easy on the sweets and alcohol, heavy on the love.
Bring it on, December.
