Listen while you read: . . . but maybe you don't want to watch.
I'm your top prime cut of meat
I'm your choice, I want to be elected
I'm your Yankee Doodle Dandy in a gold Rolls Royce
I want to be elected
Kids want a savior, don't need a fake
I want to be elected
We're all gonna rock to the rules that I make
I want to be elected
Elected, elected, respected, elected
I never lied to you, I've always been cool
I want to be elected
I gotta get the vote, and I told you 'bout school
I want to be elected, elected, elected
Hallelujah, I want to be selected
Everyone in the United States of America
We're gonna win this one, take the country by storm
We're gonna be elected
You and me together, young and strong
We're gonna be elected, elected, elected
Respected, selected, call collected
I want to be elected
And if I am elected
I promise the formation of a new party
A third party, the Wild Party
I know we have a problem
We got problems right here in Central City
We have problems on the North, South, East and West
New York City, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago
Everybody has problems
And personally, I don't care
~ Alice Cooper et al
So you voted, right? Or you're on your way to? Polls close soon; don't wait too long.
Alice Cooper has been running for President since 1972, the year that Richard Nixon beat George McGovern in a landslide, and everything went to hell. I remember my loss of political innocence that year. Originally part of 1972's Billion Dollar Babies, the song has been revived for every Presidential election since. If you watch the video linked above, you will be subjected to a rather tasteless "fight" between candidates Trump and Clinton from last fall. I urge caution; it's cringe-worthy. I was somewhat relieved to learn that Cooper always brings out candidate impersonators for every election, so that put it in some perspective for me. As for his own (fake) run for President, Cooper's motto is this: "I can do nothing as well as they can do nothing."
Of course, today is not a Presidential election. Depending on where you live, it may be a crucial election, though. I have a serious interest in my home state, as Chris Christie's successor will be determined. And closer to home, I am rooting for two very smart women to unseat the good ole boys who hold Assembly seats for my county. I voted by mail a few weeks ago. All I can do now is sit back and watch.
Listening to this song, I could not help but channel The Ramones' "I Want to Be Sedated." I'm still not sure I made the right song choice here. Depending on the outcome of today's election, I may very well want to be sedated.
Watch this space.
